Indie Studio: Onion Soup Interactive

Hi there! Tell us a bit about yourself and your studio.

Hello! My name is Amy and I’m the Community Manager for our studio. Along with my husband, Andy (developer) & Buster (the Dog), we make up Indie studio, Onion Soup Interactive. We are a British Based studio behind the cult classic, Nippon Marathon.

What game are you currently working on?

The game we are currently working on is UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel. It’s an Anime Themed Action RPG, about a hot headed reporter, named UEDI (pronounced “Weddy”), as she infiltrates a world placed on interplanetary lockdown by its ruling dictator Hazuki. Hunting for both an estranged friend and the inside-story on Hazuki’s nefarious plans, which are locked deep within his impenetrable citadel, UEDI is thrown into a war. Her only hope for survival is to join the rebellion.

What inspired UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel?

After producing our previous game, Nippon Marathon, we wanted to make something more “serious”, a game that’s a combination of gritty, beautiful, captivating, challenging, and also being fun to play and develop. Anime and Japanese culture has always played a strong part in both of our lives, so it felt like a no brainer to go with an anime genre. We were really inspired by beauty and gameplay of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, as well as the grime and grunge of Akira.

What makes UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel special?

We wanted to make an indie game that broke the boundaries of what’s expected from an Indie Studio. We celebrate the fact that we are making an open world game, and with the ability to explore on foot or on wheels, approximately 15 miles² (39 km²) of hand-crafted anime-styled open-world is available to explore. Journey through UEDI’s emotional quest to unravel the mysteries of Hazuki’s World in a motion-captured story.

UEDI has an upgradeable NanoSuit, which provides different technology for any situation that unfolds. Unlock new abilities and weapons then overclock them to unleash their true power. Engage in real-time combat with enemies that react tactically to your actions, that includes switching suits mid-battle for the advantage. Enter labyrinthine facilities, solve puzzles and battle bosses to emerge more powerful than before.Photograph UEDI in key locations and document the realities of Hazuki’s World for her truth-telling blog in a bid to reveal Hazuki’s evil plan to the world.

How is UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel different to other games in the genre?

UEDI’s NanoSuit makes our game different from other games in the same genre. The NanoSuit can be switched effortlessly between the PowerSuit, AirSuit and CommandSuit, and each suit has access to new abilities that benefits gameplay. As the gameplay relies on switching effortlessly between suits, this ultimately meant that the menu process was also streamlined. We’ve allowed the player to spend more time in game and less time in menus by seamlessly switching between suits for the perfect combination of tech for any situation.

What’s currently happening in development for UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel?

At the minute we are currently developing a playable demo. We want to have the first 20 minutes of gameplay being available as a demo. This will involve learning the controls, looting and scavenging for resources, as well as meeting a couple of the main characters, including UEDI in both cut scene and gameplay. We are currently working on the cut scene framework.

When is UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel being released?

The game is being released initially on Steam Early Access in Q1 2021, with full release in 2022. (console release is TBC). The link for our Steam Page is:

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about UEDI: Shadow of the Citadel?

We aim to have the game voiced/localised in both English and Japanese. The game will also have a completely unique, city pop soundtrack, which is being composed by Robert Ruby.
