Indie Studio: Frostward Games

Hi there! Tell us a bit about yourself and your studio.

Hi! I am Niklas Fasth, the solo developer of Frostward Games. I have been developing games for almost a year now. I started out with Unity when some friends and I wanted to start making games but I was the only one sticking to it. I am also currently finishing up my master’s degree in engineering which currently leaves little time in the evening for game development.

What game are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on Devoroth since 11 months back, an open-world fantasy RPG. It takes place on the island of Thaerendar following a grand war called “The war of the four armies”. Strange things have started happening in Devoroth and you the player wake up on Thaerendar not knowing how you got there or who you are.

What inspired Devoroth?

I have always loved the old-school RPG’s such as Kotor and Dragon Age: Origins. World of warcraft has also been a big part of my life. When I started out with the development I simply wanted to create WoW’s mechanics in a single-player game as I figured it would be simple enough for a beginner. Sure the combat mechanics are easy to implement, the over-arching RPG experience was not.

What makes Devoroth special?

As old-school RPG experiences are very sparse these days my game can certainly scratch an itch for someone who wants more slow-paced combat focusing on gear acquisition and character progression rather than fast reflexes.

How is Devoroth different to other games in the genre?

My game has a heavy focus on the slow-paced tab-targeting real-time combat compared to the more action-oriented combat from similar titles. You also have the ability to level up not only by combat but also exploration and crafting.

What’s currently happening in development for Devoroth?

Currently, I’m finishing up the demo I will be releasing on April 24. There is still a lot of things on my list I want to finish before the release so I’m working on new things every day. I just recently redesigned the whole class tree where the player choose what spell to acquire when leveling.

When is Devoroth being released?

The demo will be playable on April 24 on and Gamejolt.

Where is the best place to get the latest news about Devoroth?

If you want the latest news my twitter is the best choice.

If you only want the biggest updates I have a newsletter on my website where I send out my progress and plans about 3-4 times a year so far.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about Devoroth?

I’m just really excited to let everyone play Devoroth. I have gotten really good feedback on my social media posts and some people seem really eager to play the game. I hope I can deliver an experience people would want to have more of.
